  • The project will pilot a new business model stimulating rural development and economic growth in conflict-prone areas of Burundi and Somalia through education in solar energy and entrepreneurial skills. The key outcomes will be: 1. increased Burundian and Somali entrepreneurs in renewable energy; 2. increased access to electricity and; 3. increased education in the health aspects of renewable energy The overall aim of the pilot is to test a self-sustainable business model in two demanding markets. An innovative and holistic approach is needed when the aim is to provide solutions and opportunities for vulnerable people living in harsh environments. The social, economic and cultural conditions largely influence people’s access to and ability to purchase goods. We believe that increased education, entrepreneurial tools and access to electricity can improve conditions in target areas and provide people with opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty and into income generating activities. This will be tested in the pilot project by creating a new environment through which locals will be educated in renewable energy, get an understanding of solar products and the business opportunities it can bring. Four key project components; access to education, solar products, access to capital and research and development, will feed into existing longtime developed programs and create a spiral of new opportunities for the local population and for BRIGHT as an international solar company.
